The Everyday Miracle of Flight
I agree with comedian Louis C.K. that flying is an everyday miracle. A crowd of strangers elbows each other out of the way for overhead storage. They stuff their oversized behinds into forward-facing seats, breathe each other's recycled air from the confined cabin space, and trust that the plane won't fall out of the sky. There are even pretzels if you're lucky, a toilet if you're desperate, and alcohol if you're nervous. Amazing, right?
For some, however, airplanes aren't just a means of travel. They are a passion. If you're such a flying enthusiast, then this playlist of pop, rock, and country songs about flying is for you. The idea for this article came from fellow writer Robert Sacchi, who often writes about military and commercial aircraft, including articles about Presidential Aircraft and Airforce One.
1. "Fly Away" by Lenny Kravitz
This simple 1998 rock song, later used in commercials for Southwest Airlines, describes a narrator's wish to fly away, high into the sky. The man wishes to escape and travel over the seas like a dragonfly. When he flees, he'll fade into the sun and visit Mars and additional otherworldly destinations. The catchy tune was an international hit and a Grammy Award winner, and it changed Kravitz's career trajectory.
2. "Come Fly with Me" by Frank Sinatra
This classic 1958 pop tune was written specifically for The Chairman of the Board, Frank Sinatra. It became part of his act over a spectacular career that spanned five decades. The song features a narrator who invites his ladylove to steal away with him by plane to exotic locations like Bombay, Peru, and Acapulco Bay.
"Come Fly with Me" was used by the American Petroleum Institute for its 2018 television advertisements promoting natural gas. Sinatra also sang the 1954 flying song, "Fly Me to the Moon."
3. "Aeroplanes" by B.o.B. (Featuring Haley Williams)
Do you ever wish you could dial back time? The guy in this 2010 pop song does. He's been through a wild night of partying, and his ritzy lifestyle all seems so inauthentic. He stops and considers how he could use a wish, a dream, a genie—but will settle for wishing on an airplane—so that he could return to a simpler time.
Once the narrator rapped for mere tips in the subway and the sheer love of the music. That was back before the fame, the money, the music industry politics, and the struggle to stay relevant as an artist. He could use a wish right now, even if he has to wish on an airplane in the sky above. What are you wishing on?
4. "Learning to Fly" by Pink Floyd
"How can I escape this irresistible grasp?"
Standing in windswept fields and drawn inextricably to the skies above, the protagonist in this song sets off as a fledgling aviator. He's learning to fly, and it's pure bliss. At least two Pink Floyd members are licensed pilots, including this tune's singer/songwriter David Gilmour. The 1987 rock tune is a metaphor for embarking on a new endeavor. At the time, Gilmour had recently assumed leadership of Pink Floyd and was in essence learning to fly himself.

5. "Drunk on a Plane" by Dierks Bentley
Dierks Bentley is a pilot in real life, but in this lively country ditty from 2014, he's a would-be groom who was left at the altar. Unable to get a refund on his honeymoon tickets to Cancun, the heartbroken fella boards the 737 to Mexico, tapes the photo of his ex to her vacant seat, and starts drowning his sorrows in a river of alcohol. He shares his woes with the rest of the people on the flight then buys everyone rounds as if it's Mardi Gras in the skies. The country song crossed over to the mainstream pop charts and made the Billboard Top 40.
6. "Turbulence" by Bowling for Soup
We all need support, particularly when we're facing turbulence in our lives. (Some of us have rougher flights through life than others.) This 2011 alt-rock ballad features a guy who reassures his friend that the trouble they are facing is temporary and the promise of brighter skies lie ahead:
Take a look around you
Look how far you've come
Your whole life in front of you
You've only just begun
We've all got our problems
But they're just bumps in the road
If you only keep on fighting
There's no where you can't go.
7. "Wind Beneath My Wings" by Bette Midler
What a tear-jerker this 1989 pop number is! The iconic songstress Bette Midler took home two Grammy Awards for this song (the theme some for the film, Beaches). It expresses heartfelt appreciation to a loved one for their steady and uplifting guidance and support. While the narrator flew in the sun, their loved one stood patiently in the shadows, focusing all of their efforts on ensuring the narrator's success:
I can fly higher than an eagle,
For you are the wind beneath my wings.
If you have someone who has helped you to fly, why not thank them today?
8. "Fly Away" by TheFatRat (Featuring Anjulie)
If you've never heard of Christian Friedrich Johannes Büttner, the German record producer who goes by the pseudonym "TheFatRat," that's okay. You can catch up now. This phenomenally popular YouTuber has made important inroads on the Billboard charts with his electronic dance music.
This 2017 release has an Asian flair that adds to its glitchy electronic effect. The narrator invites her sweetheart to fly away with her where they'll ascend into the sky together then soar unafraid above the sea. She proclaims they were meant to make this change, to take this high flying journey with one another where the moon and water meet, eventually reaching out and touching the edge of space.
9. "747 (Strangers in the Night)" by Saxon
Imagine that the lights are out in New York City below and you're aboard a plane that needs to land urgently. This 1980 heavy metal song is based on the true story of such a critical air safety incident. A disaster was barely averted.
The Great Northeast Blackout of 1965 was a power disruption that impacted the northeastern United States and parts of Canada for up to 13 hours. With no lights to assist planes in landing, some were forced to remain in the air. A Scandinavian flight with 89 passengers plus the crew aboard was detoured to JFK airport in the dark. Because there were no reserve fuel tanks at that time, the plane came perilously close to using up all of its fuel.
Although the song refers to Scandinavian flight #101 and a 747 plane, it was actually flight #911 and probably a Douglas DC-8. The 747 jumbo jet wasn't introduced into commercial service for four more years. As a result of this dangerous incident, there were significant safety upgrades.
10. "On the Wings of Love" by Jeffrey Osbourne
Thanks to his sweetheart, the man in this 1982 romantic pop ballad is soaring on the wings of love. Together they are inseparable, flying high above the clouds. It definitely must be early in their relationship. Just give them a little time, and they'll come in for a landing. The song was an international hit, and it was the most successful of Jeffrey Osbourne's career.
11. "If I Had an Airplane" by SayWeCanFly (Featuring Emily James)
The girl who is at the center of this 2018 pop love ballad is experiencing anxiety, and the narrator, her kind-hearted lover, is intent upon helping her. He presents a number of imaginary scenarios to show the lengths he would go to alleviate her tension. One of these situations involves an airplane:
If I had an airplane
I'd fly it high up into space
Just to show you that it's ok
To be by yourself in the dark.
12. "Airplane" by Plain White T's
From a statistical standpoint, flying is the safest way to travel. One's chance of being in an airline accident is 1 in 11 million. But facts won't help the 6.5 percent of the population with aviophobia, or fear of flying.
If you're afraid of flying then you should be able to identify with this slow, poignant rock tune from 2010. The song's narrator, with the innocence of a child, eerily addresses the airplane he is boarding. He asks the plane to cradle him so that he is cozy, then to lull him to sleep without dropping him from the sky. The man also requests that the aircraft take him to a new, better place and arrive there on time because he has important things to do.
13. "Leaving on a Jet Plane" by Peter, Paul & Mary
This 1969 song was a chart-topper for '60s folk group Peter, Paul, and Mary. It was both their biggest hit and their last, although their friend, singer-songwriter John Denver actually wrote it. Although the song isn't about a soldier boarding a plane for war, military personnel during the Vietnam War era adapted the meaning of this song and others to fit their situation.
The bittersweet tune describes a traveling musician who is preparing to leave for the road once again. With the taxi waiting outside, the song's narrator talks to her sleeping lover in the emerging daylight. She acknowledges having previously fallen short in her fidelity. However, she pledges that when she returns on the plane it will be different because her heart sincerely belongs to him.

14. "Snoopy vs. the Red Baron" by The Royal Guardsman
Inspired by the comic strip Peanuts, this 1966 novelty song describes Snoopy imagining himself to be a heroic World War I fighter pilot. Snoopy engages his foe— German flying ace Manfred von Richthofen, the infamous Red Baron—in a deadly dogfight in the sky. Although 80 pilots before him had failed, Snoopy prevails. Their epic dogfight ends with the Red Baron's plane spiraling to his demise.
Although Snoopy was just a cartoon character, the Red Baron was indeed a real German fighter pilot revered by his countrymen and respected by his enemies. He was given a full military funeral by his foes.
15. "Watching Airplanes" by Gary Allan
The narrator's girlfriend has left him, and now she's 30,000 feet up in the air on one of the airplanes overhead. Dejected, he sits on the hood of his truck running through all the coulda-woulda-shouldas of their relationship. He ruminates, unable to figure out why she's up on that plane and he's left behind. Too late, buddy! This 2007 country song was a moderate pop crossover success.
16. "Airline Agent" by James McMurtry
Any musician who has attempted to fly with their guitar has undoubtedly tangled with an airline agent about carrying the instrument onboard. That's the situation in this 1998 country ditty. The man is traveling to his next show, and the airline agent is unfairly hassling him.
Although he's a frequent flier, the guy maintains he's being mistreated because he has long hair and is a musician. He wouldn't receive such judgment if he were a businessman in a three-piece suit. Before telling the agent he's had enough, here's what he says as a warm-up:
Mr. Airline Agent, won't you understand
I'm a frequent traveler and a patient man
But I've been mistreated a time or two
I've stood about all I'm gonna stand from you
I got my ticket in my hand just like everybody else
I paid my money in advance so I could use a little help
You're making such a fuss
You're holding up the line
Just get me on the plane everything will be fine.
17. "Turbulence" by Steve Aoki & Laidback Luke (Featuring Lil Jon)
Climb aboard Flight 900. It's on a wild journey to bring down the house. Raise your hands in the air to this 2012 electronic dance number and initiate emergency procedures. The flight has hit turbulence. The song was a modest hit in Australia, but apparently, it crashed and burned before making the trip around the global music charts. (That's too bad because it's a fun song.)
18. "Plane" by Jason Mraz
The guy in this expressive alt rock song from 2005 is involved in a long-distance love relationship. As he boards his plane then flies away from his girlfriend, his heart is still on the ground with her. He imagines that if the plane goes down, at least he had found love.
19. "I'll Fly Away" by Joey+Rory
Knowing about the background of this talented husband-wife music duo makes this 2016 hymn about flying away upon death all the more meaningful. The couple found success as a country music act when they appeared on the CMT talent show, Can You Duet. They released eight albums together, but then came the devastation of 2014.
Within a span of several months, their lives were rocked by the discovery that their newborn daughter had Down Syndrome, husband Rory's mother died, and wife Joey was diagnosed with cervical cancer. Joey died two years later at age 40. Their last project was a Grammy-winning album of hymns that included a cover of this beautiful tune about dying. It describes flying away one bright morning very soon to a land where one's joy will never end.
20. "Amelia" by Joni Mitchell
Amelia Earhart was the trailblazing pilot who became the first female aviator to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. Mysteriously she perished during her 1937 attempt to circumnavigate the globe. In this 1976 folk ditty, a woman traveling solo across the country draws parallels between her failing romantic relationship and the fated voyage of the famous pilot:
A ghost of aviation
She was swallowed by the sky
Or by the sea, like me she had a dream to fly
Like Icarus ascending
On beautiful foolish arms

I've only flown once. It was a little stormy that day & Im a big chicken, so naturally, I was terrified!!!
As we left the ground, I tried to keep my composure, but I'm pretty sure the other passengers could hear me praying.. haha.
Then the most amazing thing happened..
we broke thru the clouds and it wasn't raining or stormy or gloomy at all..
The sun was shining!!!
I couldn't keep from crying as all my fear melted into awe.
For the rest of the flight, I was singing the song "Behind The Clouds" from the "Cars" movie soundtrack by Brad Paisley.
I'm not a country music fan, but every time I think of flying, I think of that song & sometimes when I get discouraged, I still think of that flight & the moment I realized that no matter how dark life seems from my perspective, that the sun is still shining, just behind the clouds.

I was listening to an older Reba album the other day and was reminded of one of my favorite songs of hers. It was never released as a single, but I thought she sings it well enough that it should've been. Not sure if it quite fits here since it mentions being "swept up like a feather in the air," but it is about getting back up and flying after a heartbreak.

But then it hit me out of the blue - Jason Aldean has a song called "Fly Over States" and I thought you may want to add it to your list.

Pamela - I've never gotten drunk on a plane, but there was a funny situation with my husband and I when we were flying back from Europe. The flight attendant had a very thick British accent and asked, "Do you want a liqueur at all?" Well, I thought even after she repeated it that she asked me if I wanted a "le cure-it-all" and I thought, well, sure. I thought it was some special remedy for headaches, fear of flying, or jet lag prevention. I guess in a way it is. I ended up passing on the liquor.

I like to hear Dierks Bently sing, although I do not want to get drunk on a plane! I remember Peter, Paul and Mary and Joni Mitchell, as I remember them from my young years.

Audrey - I feel exactly the same way about R. Kelly and that song. It's one of my favorites, but with all he's allegedly done, I couldn't justify profiling the song prominently. I've struggled with whether I should go back to other playlists that already have it prominently featured and downplay it. But then I wonder about Michael Jackson and others. It's hard to know. Thanks for bring that up!

Kaili - He has a good reason to have a phobia! I know of some people who won't fly on business trips all over the country. Instead they drive. I like that you and husband have a sense of humor and torture yourselves with movies. Thanks for sharing.

"On the Wings of Love" ... only Jefferey Osborne can breathe life and truth into these lyrics. The modulation in the last section adds energy and confirmation to the overall message. Your comments about this song made me chuckle. How true, how true!
You've provided a marvelous list of songs about aviation and flying. "I believe I can Fly" is one of my all time favorites which I include in most of my performances. However, since all the bad publicity about R. Kelly, I won't be including it...but I'll still sing this "feel good" song in the privacy of my home. :)

Another great list! My husband was involved in a "fly-by" years ago, and is terribly afraid of flying. He watches "Mayday" to torture himself, which is OK as I do the same thing to myself when "Shark Week" is on.

Mary - That's sad about your friend's husband. Thank you for sharing your recent flight experience. Some people are very nervous about flying. In the early 1970s, my parents were involved in a near-miss when they traveled alone together on a rare vacation alone to Florida. My siblings and I were all under 4 years old at the time.

Wow, I don't think I realized how many songs talk of flying. I think perhaps we grounded people have a fascination with flight. My absolute favorite is Bette Midler's "Wind Beneath My Wings". I still get chills when I hear her sing that song.

I used to listen to Airplane by Peter, Paul and Mary. I just had a wonderful flight from the UK to Tampa and enjoyed it so much. The plane was only half full so there was enough space. There was not much turbulence either. I just never had a fear of flying but a friend lost her husband, a pilot, on a flying exhibition so when I read this, some words are just so sad.
