You can always buy a USB cigarette power plug and plug it into just a battery.

I dont know the devices origins, just saw it while looking at engadget.com as a daily bookmark. Curious if anyone has hands-on-experience (no pun intended :))

Last year I posted a link to some USB heated gloves.. I think it was to this site. Anyway, the reaction was similar regarding power usage. The products are good ideas, though. :)

There are carbon/iron heat packs that you can buy for not too much money. You need to shake them before use and then they start producing a gentle heat. They last for a couple hours.

One of my friends has them for "emergencies" (when it's very cold her hands can be extremely painful). She drops one small heat pack in each glove when needed.

Takes 25 minutes to warm up. Not exactly speedy.

25 minutes to reach 122(f), yes. :) I dont think you'll need quite that much heat.

Keep them in your pants pocket for 5 minutes before putting them in your mittens. Your body heat will get the chemical reaction going nice and strong.

I thought this was another one of those it-is-going-to-be-35*F-outside-tonight-do-you-have-any-survival-tips posts. Those always make me smile.

I think it would draw too much power. I have one that runs on lighter fluid. It gets hot in about 2 minutes, and is cheap to run. You can get them a your local army surplus store, and I think it is more rugged and more reliable. Plus no cords.

If it is cold enough outside to need a USB powered hand warmer, I would not have my laptop outside.

I got a case of the chemo warmers from fellow CNer slick_rick for xmas last year. I use'em as dew zappers on the spotter, laserpointer warmers (Li battery lasers squawk in the cold), fog driers (in the ep case on wet nights), and hand warmers. With a bunch of these and some wrm clothes - I'll take on 0°F for ~ 3 hrs....

Yeah really. We got a foot of snow yesterday, and I was still able to get to work on time. It helps that I have a 75hp snowblower, but still.

On subject, I find that gloves with mitten tops that fold off are good to about minus ten (-25 Celcius)or so. Any colder, well, the stars will have to wait, lol...
